All Businesses Look the Same at Scale – So Stop Chasing the “Passion Project”🧠

We’ve all heard it, haven’t we?

“Follow your passion and the rest will take care of itself.”

Nice idea – but if your goal is to genuinely scale a business to £1M+, that advice can lead you right off course.

Here’s the bit most people don’t say out loud:

💡 Once you scale – whether you’re doing £1M, £2M, or £3M – most businesses look exactly the same.

It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in. Accountancy, marketing, recruitment, bakery – the minute you’re at that level, your world becomes performance, not passion.

You’re not doing the day-to-day work anymore.

You’re leading people who do it.

And your role becomes… structure.

  • Weekly check-ins with your Head of Sales on pipeline health
  • Looking at delivery efficiency with Ops
  • Reviewing marketing activity against KPIs
  • Watching client metrics like NPS and retention

Whether you’re selling coaching or crumpets, the game at the top is the same.

Let Me Give You a Real Example 👇

Back when I was running Yomp – my marketing agency – the team used to call me “the mascot”. I’d pop in when we had clients round, shake a few hands, say something random (I thought charming!), then disappear.

But behind the scenes?

I was in leadership meetings.

I was reviewing finances.

I was steering strategy and keeping the ship moving.

Fast forward to now, running Million Dollar Sprint, and I’m right back in that same rhythm. Less about doing the work – more about guiding the team, tracking performance, and making sure the business grows the right way.

It’s not glamorous. It’s not “passion-fuelled”. But it’s what scaling actually looks like.

So Here’s the Truth…

If you’re constantly chasing the next big thing that feels more exciting – some “true calling” or shiny new project – just know this:

Even if you win with that new thing, it’ll end up looking exactly like what you’re already building now.

Same meetings.

Same dashboards.

Same leadership challenges.

So rather than hopping from idea to idea, you’re far better off focusing on the one you’ve already got. Scale it fast, get it performing, and build the infrastructure that frees up your time.

Then – once it’s humming – you can play around with passion projects on the side without needing them to pay your mortgage.

🔧Build the engine

📈Get it to scale

🧘♂️Then buy yourself the freedom to choose

Let’s not pretend business will always feel exciting. Let’s focus on making it work, then do it at scale.
